Beyond the famous Whangamatā surf break, North of Whangamatā in the Matariki Forest lies a network of mountain bike trails and stunning scenic routes for all to enjoy. Whangamatā Ridges Mountain Bike Park offers days of fun, excitement and exploration at every turn. From fun and easy routes to exciting group adventures and the more thrilling, advanced trails, there is something to explore for everyone. If you would like to hit the trails in the mountain bike park, you can purchase passes on the Whangamatā Ridges Website or the Whangamatā Information Centre.
The Wentworth Valley trail is a rider’s favourite, now with a newly tar sealed road and less traffic along the way. You can lock your bikes at the end of Wentworth Valley Road and walk a bit further to soak in the beauty of Whangamatā’s Wentworth Valley Waterfalls.
Another highly recommended bike ride is to the Peninsular Road lookout, also known as the Whangamatā Lookout. This 30km round trip from Whangamatā offers spectacular clifftop views overlooking Whangamata Beach, Whiritoa and as far as Tauranga.
WHANGAMATĀ RIDGES MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK
Whangamatā Ridges Mountain Bike Park is located 4km north of Whangamatā on State highway 25. The park offers grade 2-5 single track trails, there is something for everyone from families to advanced riders looking for a challenge. The bike park is situated in a commercial forest and Whangamatā Ridges MTB Park works closely with forestry operations to ensure everyone's safety. This means access to the park is restricted and at times entry to some trails is forbidden.

6km Loop | Family Fun
Whangamatā beach loop is perfect for family's wanting to explore Whangamatā. This trail explores Whangamatā via the harbour, parks, estuary and the sand dunes on the beachfront.

PENINSULA RD (WHANGAMATA LOOKOUT)
30km Return | Road + Gravel
Follow state highway 25 north out of Whangamatā for 5.5km. Take the Onemana Beach turn off and ride for 500m. The entrance to Peninsula Road is at the top of the hill, on your right.

16km Return | Road
Wentworth Valley is a 16km return ride from the heart of Whangamatā. A purpose built trail runs alongside state highway 25 . At the end of the trail turn right onto Wentworth Valley Rd and ride 5km on a gravel road until you reach Wentworth Valley Campground.

Bikes are prohibited on the Whangamatā Waterfalls walking trail.

ONEMANA MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL
500m | Intermediate
Located on the right-hand side of Whitipirorua Road when heading into Onemana. This is a short and fast mountain bike trail recommended for experienced mountain bikers.

TAIRUA RD CYCLE LOOP
10km Loop | Road
From Port Rd turn onto Tairua Road, State Highway 25. This ride winds through the hills in the outskirts of Whangamatā.

HAURAKI RAIL TRAIL
6km Loop | Family Fun
Hauraki Rail Trail is 160km of bike trails made up of 5 sections that run from Kaiaua, through Thames, Paeroa, Waihi, Te Aroha and ends at Matamata. The grade one trails are suitable for all abilities and offer 1-4 days of scenic riding.
